What Text Case Converter does

Changing case is trivial for two of the seven options and genuinely ambiguous for the rest. Upper and lower are simple character mappings. Title case has to decide what a word is and whether small words are exempt. Sentence case has to find where sentences begin. And the three programming cases have to split text into words first, which means deciding what counts as a separator.

Because those decisions differ between tools, the same input can come out differently in different converters. The rules used here are documented below, so you can predict the output rather than checking it — which matters when you are converting a long list rather than one line.

When to use it

Fixing text typed in caps lock
A paragraph typed accidentally in capitals goes to sentence case in one step, restoring the capital at the start of each sentence without retyping.
Naming things in code
Turning a human-readable label into camelCase for a variable, snake_case for a database column or kebab-case for a URL slug. All three round-trip between each other.
Cleaning up imported data
Names and addresses exported from a legacy system frequently arrive in all capitals. Title case makes a column of them readable again.
Preparing headings
Converting a sentence into title case for a heading, or the reverse when a style guide calls for sentence case throughout.

Text Case Converter settings explained

UPPERCASE
Every letter capitalised, using the locale-aware mapping the browser provides. Non-letters are untouched, and letters without an uppercase form are left as they are.
lowercase
Every letter reduced to its lowercase form. The safest conversion of the seven, since it never has to guess at word or sentence boundaries.
Title Case
Capitalises the first letter of every word and lowercases the rest. Note that it capitalises every word including "a", "of" and "the" — no small-word exceptions are applied, so a style guide that wants them lowercase needs a manual pass.
Sentence case
Lowercases everything, then capitalises the first letter of the text and the first letter after every full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Proper nouns are not restored, because recognising them would require a dictionary.
camelCase
Splits on spaces, underscores and hyphens, lowercases the first word and capitalises the first letter of each word after it, then joins them with nothing between.
snake_case
Splits on the same separators, lowercases every word and joins them with underscores. The usual convention for database columns and Python identifiers.
kebab-case
Identical to snake_case but joined with hyphens. This is what URL slugs and CSS class names use.

Limits and what to expect

  • Title case has no small-word exceptions — "of" and "the" are capitalised like any other word.
  • Sentence case cannot restore proper nouns, since telling a name from an ordinary word needs a dictionary.
  • Abbreviations ending in a full stop are treated as sentence ends, so "e.g. this" gains a capital.
  • The programming cases split only on spaces, underscores and hyphens; other punctuation is carried into the output.
  • Text is not saved — closing or reloading the tab clears the box.

Troubleshooting

Title case capitalised words that should stay lowercase
The rule capitalises every word without exception. Style guides that want articles and short prepositions lowercase need those corrected by hand — no automatic rule can distinguish "The Man in the Moon" from "In the Beginning" reliably.
Sentence case lowercased names
The conversion lowercases everything before restoring capitals at sentence starts, and it has no way to know that a word is a proper noun. Names have to be re-capitalised manually.
camelCase kept my punctuation
Words are split on spaces, underscores and hyphens only. Commas, full stops and brackets are not separators, so they travel into the identifier. Strip punctuation from the input first.
An abbreviation gained a capital after it
Sentence case treats every full stop as a sentence end, so "e.g. this" becomes "e.g. This". Distinguishing an abbreviation from a sentence end requires a dictionary, so this needs a manual fix.

Your files and your privacy

The conversion runs in your browser as you type, with no request to any server. Nothing is stored or logged, and the tool works offline. That is worth knowing given how often the text being reformatted is a list of names or an unpublished draft.

FAQ

What is the difference between title case and sentence case?

Title case capitalises the first letter of every word — "The Quick Brown Fox". Sentence case capitalises only the first word of each sentence — "The quick brown fox". Title case suits headings; sentence case suits body text and is what most modern style guides prefer for headings too.

How do I convert text to camelCase?

Paste it and choose camelCase. The text is split on spaces, underscores and hyphens, the first word is lowercased, and every word after it gets a capital first letter before they are joined together. "user first name" becomes "userFirstName".

What is the difference between snake_case and kebab-case?

Only the separator. Both lowercase every word; snake_case joins them with underscores and kebab-case with hyphens. Underscores are conventional for database columns and Python; hyphens for URLs and CSS class names, where an underscore can be hidden by an underline.

Why did title case capitalise "of" and "the"?

The rule capitalises every word with no exceptions. Which small words a style guide exempts varies between guides, and applying one guide's list would be wrong for anyone following another, so no exceptions are applied automatically.

Can I convert between the programming cases?

Yes. Because all three split on spaces, underscores and hyphens, snake_case input converts cleanly to kebab-case or camelCase and back again without an intermediate step.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The conversion happens in your browser with no network request, and nothing is stored after the tab closes.
