What YouTube Thumbnail Downloader does
Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images published alongside it at fixed addresses, one per size. Creators upload a custom thumbnail, or YouTube picks a frame, and the platform then renders it at several resolutions for different screens — from a small 320-pixel preview up to a 1280 × 720 high-definition version.
Because those files follow a predictable pattern, all this tool needs is the video's 11-character id. It reads the id from any common link format, shows every size that exists and hides the ones that do not. Older and low-resolution uploads often lack the full HD version, and YouTube returns a small grey placeholder instead.
When to use it
- Checking your own thumbnail
- Creators can see exactly how their uploaded thumbnail was compressed at each size, and keep a copy when the original design file has been lost.
- Reviews, articles and presentations
- Writing about a video or citing it in slides is easier with its thumbnail beside the link. Check the video's licence and credit the channel when you publish.
- Design research
- Collecting thumbnails from a niche side by side shows which colours, text sizes and faces work at small sizes, which is useful before designing your own.
YouTube Thumbnail Downloader settings explained
- YouTube link
- Accepts youtube.com/watch, youtu.be, Shorts, embed and live links, or the bare 11-character video id. Playlist and timestamp parameters are ignored.
- Full HD
- 1280 × 720 (maxresdefault). Only exists when the video was uploaded in HD or has a custom HD thumbnail; hidden automatically when it is missing.
- Standard and High
- 640 × 480 and 480 × 360. These are 4:3 images, so widescreen thumbnails carry black bars at the top and bottom.
- Medium
- 320 × 180, a true 16:9 crop without bars, which suits small previews and link cards.
Limits and what to expect
- Only the thumbnails YouTube itself publishes are available; there is no upscaling beyond 1280 × 720.
- Private, removed and age-restricted videos may not return any thumbnail.
- Thumbnails are the creator's artwork and may be copyrighted; get permission before reusing them commercially.
- This tool downloads thumbnail images only — it does not download the video or its audio.
Troubleshooting
- It says the link is not a YouTube video
- Copy the link from the Share button rather than the address bar of an app. Channel pages, playlists without a video and search results have no video id, so they cannot be read.
- There is no Full HD option
- The video never had a 1280 × 720 thumbnail, usually because it was uploaded in SD or before HD thumbnails existed. Standard (640 × 480) is then the largest available.
- Pressing JPG opens the image in a new tab instead of downloading
- Some browsers or privacy extensions block the direct download. The image then opens in a tab; right-click or long-press it and choose Save image.
Your files and your privacy
The link you paste is only read inside your browser to extract the video id. The thumbnail images are then loaded directly from YouTube's own image servers, as they are when you browse YouTube. We do not see or store which videos you look up.

FAQ
What is the highest thumbnail quality available?
1280 × 720 pixels, labelled Full HD here. YouTube does not publish a larger version, so no tool can download a bigger original.
Does it work with YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste the youtube.com/shorts/ link and the thumbnails load the same way as for a normal video.
Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?
Viewing and saving a thumbnail is generally fine for personal use, but the image belongs to the creator. Ask permission before reusing it commercially or in your own videos.
Why do some thumbnails have black bars?
The Standard and High sizes are 4:3 images, while most videos are 16:9, so YouTube letterboxes them. Use Full HD or Medium for a bar-free widescreen image.
Can this download the video itself?
No. This tool only saves the thumbnail image. A YouTube video and audio downloader is planned and is listed as coming soon on this site.
