What Delete PDF Pages does

Deleting a page from a PDF is subtraction: you name what should go, and everything else survives. That framing matters because it decides how you write the selection. Removing three unwanted pages from a forty-page report means typing three numbers, where the opposite approach would mean typing thirty-seven.

The pages that survive are copied as complete objects — their fonts, images and vector content move across unchanged — and a new document is assembled from them. Nothing is re-encoded, so a scanned page stays exactly the scan it was and text stays selectable. The original file on your device is never modified.

When to use it

Dropping a cover or blank page
Scanners commonly add a blank sheet from a double-sided feed, and downloaded documents often open with a title page nobody needs. Deleting one page number handles both.
Removing pages before sharing
A contract with an internal annex, or a statement with pages covering a different account. Deleting them produces a document you can send without redacting anything.
Cutting adverts from a scanned magazine
Advert pages are usually scattered rather than contiguous, which is exactly what a comma-separated list handles — 4, 9, 15-16, 22 in one go.
Trimming a document to a size limit
When a portal caps the upload, removing pages you do not need is often a better answer than compressing the ones you do, because it costs no quality at all.

Delete PDF Pages settings explained

Pages to delete
A comma-separated list of numbers and ranges — 1, 4-6, 9. Page numbers start at 1 and refer to positions in the document, not to any printed page number on the paper.
Ranges
Written as from-to with the ends included, so 4-6 removes three pages. A range must ascend; 6-4 is rejected rather than silently reversed, because that is more likely a typo than an intention.
Duplicate entries
Listing the same page twice is harmless — the selection is de-duplicated before anything is removed, so 3, 3-5 deletes three pages rather than failing.
The keep-one guard
Selecting every page is refused with an explicit message. An empty PDF is a valid file that no reader will display usefully, so producing one is treated as a mistake rather than a request.
Output
A file named freetools-trimmed.pdf, reporting how many pages were kept rather than how many were removed — the count you actually want to verify.

Delete, extract or split

Three ways to end up with fewer pages, and when each is the right one.

Limits and what to expect

  • Page numbers refer to positions in the file, which may not match numbers printed on the pages.
  • Every page cannot be deleted — at least one must remain.
  • Bookmarks, form fields and annotations are not carried into the new document.
  • The file size drops roughly in proportion to what the removed pages contained, not to their count.
  • Documents that need a password to open cannot be read; permission-restricted ones are fine.

Troubleshooting

"Page 12 does not exist — this document has 10 pages"
The number is past the end of the file. This usually means you are reading a printed page number that differs from the document position — a report whose body starts at printed page 1 but sits at file position 3, for instance.
"That would delete every page — keep at least one"
Your selection covers the whole document. If you genuinely want nothing from this file, you do not need to produce a PDF at all. If you meant the inverse, use extract pages and list what you want to keep.
"Could not read '4 to 6'. Use formats like 1, 3-5"
Ranges use a hyphen, not the word "to" or a colon. Write 4-6. Spaces around the hyphen are fine; anything else in the field is rejected rather than guessed at.
The file barely got smaller
Size follows content, not page count. Deleting ten pages of text from a document whose weight is one scanned photograph changes very little. Compress the result if size is the actual goal.

Your files and your privacy

The document is read into the browser tab, the surviving pages are copied into a new one, and the result is offered for download — all on your own device. Nothing is uploaded. That is worth stating for this tool in particular, because deleting pages before sharing usually means the pages being removed are the sensitive ones.

FAQ

How do I delete multiple pages at once?

List them separated by commas, mixing single numbers and ranges freely: 1, 4-6, 9 removes five pages in one pass. The pages do not need to be adjacent or in order, and repeating a page in the list is harmless.

Does deleting pages reduce quality?

No. The pages you keep are copied as complete objects with their fonts and images intact — nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed. A scan stays the same scan and text stays selectable.

Why does it say page 12 does not exist?

Page numbers here are positions in the file, counting from 1, not the numbers printed on the pages. A document with a cover and a contents page puts printed page 1 at file position 3, so the two run out of step.

Can I get the deleted pages back?

Not from the output — they are gone from that document. Your original file is never modified, though, so open it again and extract the pages you wanted instead.

What happens to bookmarks and form fields?

They are not carried across. The operation copies pages, so text, images, fonts and page dimensions all survive, but document-level structures like outlines and interactive form fields do not.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The document is read and rebuilt inside your browser tab, and the tool keeps working with the network disconnected once the page has loaded.
